On Eric Kim

A lot of people talk shit about Eric Kim. His photography is mediocre, he regurgitates the masters, he sells over priced accessories, he’s annoying and full of himself, his workshops are a total waste of money, he just won’t go away. I think I’ve heard it all, but in his defense, you have to respect the hustle.

Why is Eric Kim at the top of Google search results under street photography? Because he wants it. He is willing to embrace the struggle. It’s his passion. He’s fucking earned it.

There are many street photographers who have the potential to be in Eric’s place, they’re just lazy. They talk shit because they want to be on top, but don’t want to put in the work and power through the bullshit to get there.

In my opinion, Jon Luvelli is a better photographer than Eric Kim. His book, One Block, is a fucking masterpiece, yet he doesn’t wear the crown. He doesn’t want it.

One of my favorite documentary photographers is, Daniel D. Teoli Jr., and I can guarantee you’ll learn more from his website than from Kim’s. But the majority of “street togs” don’t have a fucking clue who he is.

I’ve watched Eric’s You Tube videos, read his blog, and even purchased Street Notes and Photo Journal. Before you write him off, I encourage you to do the same. You just might learn something.

Is Eric Kim the G.O.A.T.? No, but you’ve got to respect the hustle.

As for me, I’m content in the trenches.
